Pulse Latency Measurement - First Time Guide

What is Pulse?

Pulse is a frame-accurate latency measurement system for broadcast displays. It uses visual grid encoding to measure the delay between when content is displayed and when it's captured by a camera, with sub-frame accuracy.

How to Measure Latency

Step 1: Setup the Generator Display

  1. Open this page on the device that will be shot by your production camera
  2. Select the frame rate that matches your production setup
  3. Click Generator to display the measurement pattern
  4. Position the device so it will be visible in your production camera shot
  5. Look for the green alignment box on the generator - this shows the detection area
  6. Keep the generator running during measurement

Step 2: Setup the Measuring Device

  1. Open this page on a separate device that has a camera (phone, tablet, or computer)
  2. Select the same frame rate as the generator
  3. Click Analyzer to start the measurement tool
  4. Allow camera access when prompted
  5. Point the camera at the generator display (the device from Step 1)
  6. Position the camera so the entire green box is fully visible in the camera view

Step 3: Calibrate

  1. Press the Calibrate button in the analyzer
  2. Wait for the 3-second countdown to complete
  3. Keep the camera completely still during calibration
  4. If the grid pattern isn't detected:
    • Use the zoom slider to make the grid larger
    • Increase the contrast slider if the pattern looks faint
    • Ensure the entire green box is visible in the camera view
  5. Once calibrated, the analyzer stays active and maintains sync

Step 4: Measure

  1. Press the Measure button to start the measurement
  2. Keep the camera still while it collects 300 samples
  3. After measurement completes, you'll see results displayed as: "2 frames (33.33ms)"
  4. This shows the latency in both frames and milliseconds

Measuring Multiple Monitors: After calibrating once, you can measure different monitors in your signal chain without recalibrating. Simply point the camera at each monitor and press Measure. Important: Keep the analyzer active on the measuring device - don't close it or switch tabs, or you'll lose sync and need to recalibrate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Different FPS settings: Generator and analyzer must use the same frame rate
  • ❌ Green box cut off: The entire green alignment box must be visible in the camera
  • ❌ Moving during calibration: Keep the camera still during the 3-second countdown
  • ❌ Wrong camera angle: Camera should be perpendicular to the display, not at an angle

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Ensure the generator display fills a good portion of the camera view
  • Use the zoom slider to make the grid larger in the camera view
  • Increase contrast if the grid pattern is hard to see
  • Measure multiple times and average the results for consistency

Troubleshooting

Camera won't start

  • Check browser camera permissions in settings
  • Make sure you granted camera access when prompted
  • Try refreshing the page and allowing access again

Grid not detected

  • Use zoom slider to make the grid larger in the camera view
  • Increase contrast slider if the pattern looks faint
  • Ensure the entire green box is visible (not cut off)
  • Move camera closer or adjust the angle
  • Make sure the generator and analyzer are using the same frame rate

Inconsistent results

  • Verify the frame rate matches on both generator and analyzer devices
  • Don't move the camera during measurement
  • Keep the analyzer active - don't close it or switch tabs between measurements
